A fiddler on the roof. Sounds crazy, no? But in our little village of Anatevka, you might say that every one of us is a fiddler on the roof; trying to scratch out a pleasant, simple tune without breaking his neck. It isn't easy.
-Tevye Fiddler on the Roof has remained one of the most popular musicals in history since its Broadway debut in 1964. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, was the first run of a musical in history to surpass the 3,000 performance mark. In fact, Fiddler held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years.. It remains one of Broadway's longest-running shows in history.
Indeed, the themes of the musical are just as universal today as they were in 1964, and as they surely were in 1905. The story centres on Tevye, the father of five daughters and his struggle to keep his family and his Jewish traditions intact in the face of outside pressures. His three oldest daughters marry men he disapproves of, and on top of that, he must deal with an edict from the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their villages.
Religious persecution, marriage, the breakdown of ethnic identity and tradition — these are the issues that still dominate the headlines today. We are delighted to be able to bring this wonderful production to life in 2012, with a very talented production team.
